Planning Your Dream Nigerian Wedding: A 12-Month Timeline

From the introduction to the after-party — a month-by-month plan that keeps a Nigerian wedding calm, costed and on schedule.

A Nigerian wedding is not one event. Most couples end up hosting an introduction, a traditional ceremony, a church or nikkah service, a reception and an after-party — sometimes across two cities and two families' expectations. The couples who enjoy their own wedding are almost always the ones who started early and wrote everything down.

This is the timeline we use with our clients at The Velvet Heritage, adapted to how weddings actually work here.

12 to 10 months out

Agree the guest count and the budget before anything else. In Nigeria the guest list is the budget — catering, souvenirs, seating and venue size all move with it. Have the honest conversation with both families now, because a list that grows from 300 to 600 in month eight will cost you more than any decor upgrade.

Decide your cities and dates. If the traditional is in the east and the white wedding is in Lagos, build travel and rest days into the plan.

9 to 7 months out

  • Secure venues and pay deposits — good Lagos and Abuja halls go 9 to 12 months ahead for December and Easter dates
  • Book photography and video first; the best teams book out earliest
  • Lock in your planner and decorator so design and logistics develop together
  • Start the aso-ebi selection and pricing while there is time for fabric to arrive

6 to 4 months out

Finalise catering with a tasting, and be specific about quantities per head. Confirm small chops, drinks and the service style — buffet queues at a 500-guest reception need twice the stations most caterers propose.

Send IVs now, not later. Print more than you think you need and track distribution by family, because untracked IVs are the main cause of over-attendance.

3 to 2 months out

  • Confirm the traditional rites list with elders and start assembling items
  • Book generators, power backup, security, ushers and cleaning — the forgotten line items
  • Confirm hotel blocks for out-of-town guests and airport pickups
  • Do a full technical visit to each venue with your decorator and AV vendor

The final month

Everything now is confirmation, not decision. Issue a master timeline to every vendor, hold one alignment call, pay outstanding balances, and appoint a single family liaison who is not the bride, groom or either mother.

Then hand it over. A wedding day should be the one day you are a guest at your own celebration.
